Sometimes my ideas start with a rough sketch, and I mean ROUGH! Heart of a Mermaid is a great example of how a super rough concept sketch can turn into something magical. This illustration showcases a spread layout that works perfectly for a book cover or a double page interior.
Bubbles The Pug

Bubbles the Pug is a concept illustration and cover design. A few of the main objectives with this piece were to play with how light enters a space and how it interacts with other objects. I also focused on integrating text into the scene to create a cohesive and seamless design.
Boopsie The Bee
Concept Design Illustration
Boopsie the Bee started as a character concept about a clumsy bee who wants to help, but seems to always make things worse by accident. I played with backlit sunlight to create a sense of magic and wonder to bring the character and its surroundings to life.
Maddie's Muffins
Concept Design Illustration
Maddie's Muffins is an illustration focused on exploring unique hairstyles and textures, as well as how shadows are created from a prominent light source. I focused on establishing a cute color palette to bring the illustration to life and added a few sparkles to sneak in a little magic. (One of my favorite ways to finalize an illustration!)

Character consistency is so important in children's book illustration, and that was the main focus with this character design sheet. Establishing character proportions, perspectives, and emotions help breathe life into a character and provide a solid reference for telling a visually cohesive story.
